Cellulose Fibers (Plant)

It is extremely important to have a general idea about the type of fiber you are cleaning. The reason is you will need to know the characteristics relating to the carpets durability, colour fastness and how it reacts to chemicals.

1. Cellulose Fiber Carpets

Cellulose are vegetable classification carpets which include cotton, jute, and linen. cotton and jute are found in the backing of a carpet. cotton being part of a woven type carpet and jute used as a backing on secondary backed carpet.

a. Cotton

Cotton is strong and durable, though is not very resilient. it can be dyed very easily and this means it stains. cotton will also turn brown in the presence of high alkalinity and degrade in moderate solutions of inorganic acids like hydrochloric, sulfuric or nitric acids.

Cotton can withstand strong bleaches like sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) it will degrade if not rinsed out or neutralized. cotton performs well when bleached with diluted hydrogen peroxide but the oxidizing effects od strong peroxide above 3% can damage it.

b. Jute

like cotton jute can brown when exposed to high alkaline for long periods. it does not like inorganic acids or oxidising bleaches. such as chlorine bleach and hydrogen peroxide.

c. Linen

Linen is  made from a reed like plant called flax. it will turn dark when wet and become weak but regains its strength when dry. because its brittle it is easily distorted when aggressive tamping action. plus it stains very easily. don't use aggressive bleaching as it will not withstand this. Sisal responds just like linen.
